Katura Harvey 2nd at Open Water Nationals
Friday, 12 June 2009
At  USA Swimming’s Open Water National Championships held in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, NCAC & UNC swimmers turned in some spectacular finishes.  In the 5k,  competitors battled a stiff 15-mph breeze and extremely choppy seas as they made two circuits of the 2.5-kilometer course.  Katura Harvey finished 2nd overall in the women's 5k race, behind only 2008 Olympian Chloe Sutton.  UNC rising Junior Ashley Miller also had a very good swim, turning in a 7th place finish in the women's race.  NCAC's Bryce Mendes made his National Championship debut in proud fashion, finishing 19th place in the field of 33 men.  Harvey, Miller and rising UNC junior Joe Kinderwater also competed in the 10k race, which served as the World Championship Trials.  The water was calm and flat as the racers made four circuits around the same course as Friday’s 5k.  Joe bounced around within the lead pack for most of the race and put on a strong drive to the finish to take 7th place overall, qualifying him for the USA Open Water National Team.  In the women’s race, Ashley Miller swam strong 3rd and 4th laps to garner a very respectable 12th place overall.  Katura Harvey wasn’t far behind in 14th.  Way to go NCAC!

NCAC Awarded Silver Medal Status For 4th Consecutive Year
Tuesday, 07 April 2009

April 6 - USA Swimming released the club excellence standings today, and NCAC received Silver Medal recognition, the second-highest honor to be bestowed on a club.  We are the only club in the Chapel Hill-Durham area and one of only 5 in North Carolina to receive at least the Silver designation.

The USA Swimming Club Excellence Program is a voluntary program that identifies and recognizes USA Swimming clubs for their commitment to excellence in performance and for their support of the sport.

In addition to recognizing the top club teams, the program provides grant funding for resources that enable clubs to expand and/or enhance the services they already provide for athletes. A total of $320,000 in grant dollars will be distributed to 100 Gold and Silver-level clubs.
