Michael Baric To Soar at UNC-W
Friday, 05 February 2010
NCAC and Eastern Alamance High School senior Michael Baric has made his college decision, and plans to soar with the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington.  Michael is a Junior National qualifier with obvious talent in all four strokes.  In Columbus this December, he competed in the 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM.  Capable of swimming any stroke over any distance, Michael will no doubt be a force to reckon with for Coach Dave Allen's men's squad.  He boasts lifetime bests of 21.59 (50 free), 48.14 (100 free), 52.93 (100 back), 52.05 (100 fly), 59.28 (100 breast), and 200 IM (1:55.82).

Michael becomes the third member of his family to swim at UNC-W.  His older sisters Cristina (NCAC class of 2004) and Michelle (NCAC class of 2006) preceded him.

January Swimmers of the Month
Tuesday, 02 February 2010
Swim School - Alaina Sacco. Despite being only six years old and new to year-round swimming in the fall, Alaina swam both the 100 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke for the first time at the Duke Nike Meet.  However, it was tough to tell that she had never swum these events, as she handled it like a pro!  In practice, Alaina always has a smile for those around her, pays attention, and works hard to do what the coaches ask of her.

Bronze - Maya Levin is new to year-round swimming and the Duke Nike Meet was her first competition with NCAC.  Right off the bat Maya earned several B times!  Maya often leads her lane during practice, and does a great job of following directions and making adjustments to her strokes when asked.  Because of her eagerness to learn, Maya has already made a great deal of progress!

Silver - Maddie Creatore made the Swimmer of the Month selection process easy this month by attending practice regularly, being on time, having a great attitude, working hard, and guess what?... At the Eastern Classic meet in Atlanta, she went 100% lifetime best times and got her first ever JO cut in the 50 back!

Gold - Maddie Macmillan completes the Swimmer of the Month sweep by the "Maddies" of the Silver and Gold groups. Miss Macmillan has done an excellent job this season, making real progress with her swimming and carrying herself like a mature young lady. Macmillan's meet results have consistently improved, and at the recent Eastern Classic meet in Atlanta, Maddie went 100% lifetime bests by an average of almost 4 seconds... that's kinda' awesome!

Varsity - Ben Updike always comes to practice ready to work hard and give 110%.  Ben’s can-do attitude and positive leadership helps to motivate his lane-mates to stay focused and not become discouraged during difficult sets.  Because of his hard work, Ben had several great swims at the Duke Nike Meet on Jan 8-10, dropping a total of 25 seconds!

Senior 2 - Annabelle Kayye has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving her stroke technique in all four strokes which has enhanced her already versatile skills.  Through this improvement she has not only increased her potential for racing success but also ensured a stronger and healthier body.  Keep an eye on Annabelle Kayye in the coming months as she is bound for success!

Senior 1 - Chris Gondek has "made the leap" to a new level of swimming with his recent performances.  At Senior Champs, he stroked to new lifetime bests in the 1,000 free and 200 free.  He has consistently been training with "Big Boys" of Senior I and his competitive results prove it!

December Swimmers of the Month
Friday, 01 January 2010
Senior 1 - Michael Baric.  At the NSS Invitational, Michael swam 21.59 in the 50 free to make a Jr. National cut.  He went on to compete at Juniors in the 50 free, 200 IM, and 100 breast. Way to go Michael!
Senior 2 - Matt Lee. Matt has done an exceptional job in practice the last few months and his hard work is beginning to pay off.  At the recent Reindeer Meet  Matt posted 8 out 9 lifetime best times!  Matt consistently leads his lane not only pushing himself but also challenging his teammates to train at a higher level.  Keep up the good work Matt!
Varsity - John Cook.  John swam very well at the RSA Reindeer meet, dropping several seconds in multiple events.  John is also very consistent and reliable in practice and sets a positive example for other less experienced swimmers to follow.  Thanks John!
Gold - Bijan Zakerin. The swimmer of the month designation is long overdue for this young man who has posted 100% lifetime best times if pretty much every meet. In fact, his coach is pretty sure he posted 100% lifetime best times for the entire fall. This feat is to be commended but is no surprise as he is among the leaders of his group in attendance and when he is there is definitely a leader in the quality of his practices, constantly challenging himself to be better on a daily basis. Good job Bijan!
Silver - Tommy Baric has improved his practice habits and has been challenging himself consistently whenever he gets wet. Tommy's work paid off at the recent Reindeer meet at TAC, where he posted lifetime bests in 6 out of his 7 swims by an average of 3 and a half seconds! Way to go Tommy!
Bronze - Kara Mathes.  At the RSA Reindeer meet when Kara swam the 100 Breast, her cap broke and her goggles fell off.  Refusing to be deterred by these obstacles, Kara not only kept swimming and finished the race, but she even had a smile on her face when she climbed out at the end.  And with good reason – she had still managed to drop 10 seconds off her best time!  While Kara’s hard work in practice has definitely contributed to her steady improvements across the board, Kara’s greatest strength is her unfailing enthusiasm and positive disposition.  Kara’s laughter brightens the world around her, and helps contribute to a positive and fun atmosphere both in practice and at meets.
Swim School - Katherine Dokholyan.  New to swimming in August, at the RSA Reindeer meet (her first) Katherine missed her B time in the 50 Back by less than a tenth of a second!  In practice, Katherine is always very focused and determined to do her best.  She sets a great example for others in the group by listening and following directions well, and clearly her hard work has paid off!

Emily Tysinger Chooses Kenyon College
Friday, 18 December 2009
NCAC and Carrboro High School senior Emily Tysinger has chosen to attend Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.  Emily is a freestyle and backstroke specialist and a Junior National qualifier.  After recovering from a fractured humerus one year ago, Emily has rebounded to become one of the top sprinters in NC.  She anchored the Carrboro High 200 free relay to a come-from-behind victory at last year's state championship and competed at the NCSA Junior Nationals in Orlando.

Kenyon is a small liberal arts school in central Ohio, and swimming may be what it is most known for.  In head coach Jim Steen's 34 years on campus, the Lords and Ladies have won a combined 49 Division III National Championships, the most of any single coach in NCAA history.  The women's program won 17 consecutive titles from 1984-2000 and began a new streak in 2007 that now stands at 3.  Congratulations, Emily, on all of your success thus far!  All of us at NCAC wish you continued success at Kenyon!

November Swimmers of the Month
Tuesday, 01 December 2009
David Williams (Senior 1):  David had an excellent meet vs. RSA, winning the men's 100 fly in 53.21.  This month he has challenged himself and others more at practice, performing at a level sure to help him reach new heights in this month's meet!

Liam McCullough (Senior 2) Liam has been an outstanding addition to the senior 2 group.  As of late I have noticed that no matter our activity, be it dry land or swimming Liam is not only working hard but has been doing everything properly and how his coach has instructed.  This sounds like a simple task but most any swimmer could learn a thing or to from Mr. Liam.  Well done Liam and keep it up!

Lucas McCrory
(Varsity):  New to competitive swimming in the fall, Lucas has now achieved Can-Am qualifying times in two events, making him eligible to compete in the US Paralympics Swimming Nationals!  Lucas attends practice regularly, responds positively to criticism of his stroke technique, and makes an effort to quickly turn new skills into old habits.  Keep up the good work!

Wendi Su and Abigail Lloyd (Gold) Wendi should be recognized for her steady drive and determination to improve. Wendi rarely misses practice and also rarely does not swim a lifetime best in her races at meets... imagine that! Over the last two weekends of racing, Wendi swam her way to lifetime bests in 11 out of 16 swims, most improvements coming by multiple seconds. Keep it up Wendi! Abigail posted 12 new lifetime best over the last two weekends of racing, including a perfect 6 for 6 at the Tri Meet! Abigail seems to have gotten in touch with her inner champion and has blossomed into a dynamic racer over the last two weeks, consistently beating heats with her confident approach. Way to go Abigail!

Jaylyn Forrest (Silver) Jaylyn has been working hard to improve at practice and her work showed at last weekend's Tri-Meet with RSA and GSA. Jaylyn got her first ever JO cut in the 100 fly, dropping almost 8 seconds in the event in the process. Way to go Jaylyn!

Ethan Feng (Bronze):  Ethan got 1st place in all of his events at the YOTA 8&U meet.  Ethan almost never misses a practice, and does a great job of listening and following directions whenever he’s in the water.  His hard work paid off – congratulations!

Emily Huang (Swim School):  Emily swam 100% best times at the YOTA 8&U meet.  Emily is very focused during practice, and always willing to accept the challenge of tackling a new skill.  Her hard work and positive attitude during practice have resulted in rapid improvement in all of her strokes.  Great job!

Six Place in IMX National Top 100
Friday, 20 November 2009
The IM Xtreme Challenge (IMX)is a USA Swimming motivational program where swimmers are scored on their performances in a combination of five or six events. The purpose of the program is to promote versatility in age group swimming while advocating greater participation and development across a range of events that are integral to long term success in swimming. By encouraging swimmers to swim a variety of events, we hope to avoid any tendency to specialize in narrow selection of events at a young age.

Six NCAC athletes placed in the top 100 of their single-year age groups for this past LC season. Congratulations to these athletes - keep up the awesomely fast swimming!

College Swimmers' Update
Thursday, 19 November 2009

UNC frosh Carly Smith has had a stellar beginning to her collegiate career.  Against ECU in her first dual meet, she won the 100 and 200 backstrokes (55.73 and 2:00.20, respectively) and led off the Tar Heels' winning 400 medley relay.  Both of her backstroke swims broke Minges Natatorium records.
